Shabna's story

Young mum Shabna has just found out her boyfriend Marco cheated on her with a girl who may have HIV.

What can I do?

We want your time rather than your money. If you’re inspired, here’s what you can do. As a young volunteer, you can tell others about things that matter either online or face-to-face. There are many different volunteer projects across the UK with lots to choose from, including things like photo competitions and producing newsletters, all aimed at highlighting discrimination against people living with HIV.

Make online networks work for you

HIV: What’s The Story? has a Bebo profile. Here you can watch dramatised videos of people telling their stories. Make friends with the characters, leave comments and tell all your Bebo friends to join in. You can also do this on Facebook and Myspace. The videos are on YouTube too. Tell everyone about the campaign and help spread the word.

Telling the story to other young people in the UK

You can volunteer to become a ‘peer educator’ and talk to people your own age about things that matter. You’ll train to become someone who tells others in a classroom or youth group about big humanitarian issues like HIV. You might facilitate interactive workshops with young people aged between 12 and 18 about HIV, as well as other global human welfare issues, such as child soldiers or refugee awareness. You decide how to make a difference.

Tell the story face to face

Donate to help our international HIV programmes

Your money will help us to provide care to people in their homes living with HIV & AIDS so that they can continue to live independently. Your money will also help us to train and support young people to help them understand, and hopefully reduce, the risks of further HIV infections, across 7 countries.
Our programmes vary in each country, but for example, your money might buy:

A safe space for young Kyrgyz volunteers to teach other young people about HIV and safe sex

Transport for Ethiopian volunteers to visit people living with HIV in remote areas, and help them to continue to lead independent lives

School fees or supplies for children in South Africa whose parents are living with HIV

Food, and seeds and tools to help South African families affected by HIV and AIDS remain independent, and grow their own food
